U.S. Designates 3 Muslim Brotherhood Chapters as Terrorist Organizations

State and Treasury Departments impose sanctions citing security concerns.

The U.S. recently designated the Lebanese, Jordanian, and Egyptian branches of the Muslim Brotherhood as a Foreign Terrorist Organization and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) under federal terrorism authorities, following a review directed by an executive order from President Trump.

“These designations reflect the opening actions of an ongoing, sustained effort to thwart Muslim Brotherhood chapters’ violence and destabilization wherever it occurs,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated. “The United States will use all available tools to deprive these Muslim Brotherhood chapters of the resources to engage in or support terrorism.”

The State Department classified the Lebanese branch as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, while the Treasury Department designated the Jordanian and Egyptian branches as Specially Designated Global Terrorists, citing findings that they provided material support to Hamas. The actions trigger sanctions, restrict financial activity, and make material support to the designated entities a criminal offense under U.S. law.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretaries Rubio and Bessent as they oversee the placement of their departments’ respective sanctions.
  • For discernment for State and Treasury Department officials implementing sanctions and enforcement actions.
  • For U.S. counterterrorism personnel as they report on the threats to national security.
